Fly Fishing Sea Island Georgia
Fly fishing the waters around Sea Island and the Golden Isles of Georgia is fun challenging and fulfilling.
The waters in the “Ball Park” behind Sea Island, are full of red fish and Sea Trout. We silently stalk the back waters looking for redfish in inches of water. When you see one push water or tail, your heart starts racing. Focus on where you want your fly to go. ( In front of the fish. Don’t bonk him on the head!) Slowly and irregularly start a short retrieve. Suddenly the 7 lb fish explodes on your fly, and you are off to the races. Keep your line tight and get him on the reel quickly. I guarantee you the fish will test your drag. A 10 lb fish will take you to your backing! Work him into the boat. The captain will grab him, hoist him aboard for a quick photo and satisfying release. Remember, game fish are precious and need to live to fight again.
If it is in season and it is your preference, we may stalk Tarpon in the back country. These are large fish, ranging from 60 to 100+ lbs. Heavy fly rods and lines are critical in casting the big flies and landing the fish. It is difficult to truly sight fish Tarpon in the back country. The water in the Summer is usually murky. We fish for them by waiting for rolling fish to come by. Then cast a line in front with a big bunker pattern on the end of the leader. They may see it, they may not. And even if they see it they may not grab it. After all, they are Tarpon.
Depending on the migration, we may stake out on a bar in the ocean and wait for the fish to swim by. Or if they are on bait, we may fish bait balls. When they are on bait balls, you will see fish busting the surface eating hand sized Pogies (Menhaden). On the right tides, you may see the fish grab the fly. Tarpon fishing requires patience and dedication. If you are up to the task, you should try Tarpon fishing in the Golden Isles of Georgia. Tarpon trips need to be a minimum of 6 hours.
Sea trout are normally present. In the fall, when they are schooling, catching a few on fly is great fun. You are welcome to take some home for dinner.
In the Spring, Triple Tail free float in the waters around Sea Island, GA. This is another unique and challenging fishery.
